How do we refine your trash and turn it into cash?

Receiving

From the moment your scrap arrives at our refinery, it is treated with kid gloves. We check and re-check everything, and we protect it around the clock. After all, it’s not just your money we’re guarding … it’s our reputation.

To protect the integrity of your lots, we employ systems - such as closed circuit television - and security processes, all under the rigorous supervision of dedicated people whose job it is to protect your interests.

Laboratories

Our analytical laboratories play a key role in handling your scrap. Among other techniques, we utilize x-ray fluorescence to analyze both liquid and solid materials, atomic absorption spectrometry for solution samples, and emission spectral analysis to detect even trace elements. The tests give us detailed information on the materials contained in a sample, and which are present in sufficient quantity to test or assay quantitatively.

Wet Chemical Analysis

Wet chemical assaying techniques are used to supplement fire assaying and physical measurements. Through these techniques, we are able to determine exactly how much of each precious metal is present in your refining lot.

How is the accuracy of your assay assured? Think of everything we do … we thoroughly homogenize your scrap; we sample the entire lot, not just part of it. We take multiple samples of your lot, assay them independently, and cross-check them to eliminate any possibility of error. And even then, there is one final precaution: we hold your lot intact until settlement.

What do You Get?

A fair and rapid check from Handy & Harman. Our average turn-around time from receipt of your lot to settlement is significantly less than the industry average. Or, if you wish, you can choose a credit in your consignment account for the value of your reclaimed scrap, less refining charges. You can even use the precious metal from your consignment account to fund the purchase of any of the products we make.

And While We’re at It …

We protect the environment, which is crucial since the government considers you responsible for any potentially polluting materials contained in your lot. Our refineries use state-of-the-art equipment and processes that are so effective that they remove all potentially polluting materials during the refining process.
